my boyfriend wants us to take ballroom dancing classes?

has anyone else done this? how was it? what kind of dance did you learn?
tango?
swing?
what is balroom dancing exactly?
we're in our twentys, and this idea of his kinda came out of the blue. it actualy sounds like fun but I'm a little bemused.
great answers so far, thanks, any sugestions on what type of shoes I should wear to learn? do I need heels? or would flats be ok?

I take Ballroom lessons!!! Ballroom lessons are great !!! I have Sooo much fun . I am single and I have no problem with finding a partner. As a couple learning together or with friends makes the experience fun and enjoyable (It is just as fun alone !!! ). On my first night I learned a swing ,Waltz and Rumba. I have learned Waltz,Salsa,Rumba,Char-Cha, Lindy Hop,Foxtrot,East & West Coast Swing,Tango, ect.Ballroom dancing is dancing with a partner. You dance in a classic form and glide acrossed the floor. The dances came from different countries then came over by immigrants. A Ballroom Frenzy started in the 30's and 40's , then started back up a few years ago… drawing younger crowds.Ballroom is a tone of fun !!! You should try it out . Don't give up on the first night wait a few lessons you'll get much better. I became better by my 3rd lesson. Don't get fusterated you'll get the hang of it.

Shoes - Don't wear sneakers or flats. They have rubber soles and you can break your leg because they woun't glide.I would wear heels that can glide on wood floors. You can also wear your socks before you get your shoes… I did!!! It may just be a little hard on your feet without heels. Heels make life easier in dancing. Wear shoes that are confortable.

Clothing - You don't have to wear a shirt . I wear my jeans !!! Wear what is confortable. Trust me … their is plenty of people wearing jeans but you can get dressed up !!!

In the US, you'll probably be doing American-style ballroom. There are four official "smooth" dances: foxtrot, waltz, tango and Viennese waltz. In addition, there are five "rhythm" dances: swing, mambo, bolero, rumba and cha cha. But those nine aren't all: samba, western swing, and several others will be found almost everywhere.
In the International style, there are five "standard" dances: slow foxtrot, slow waltz, quickstep, Viennese waltz, and tango. The "latin" dances are rumba, cha cha, samba, paso doble and jive. Social dances are also additional options in this style.
It can be a bit expensive for hobby dancers at your age, but if you shop and budget carefully, it'll be a blast.

I didn't learn ballroom until I was an adult. I took it up because my boyfriend (at that time) was already into it. In Canada, some studios do International and others to American style. I imagine in the US it would be mostly American style. Depending on what studio you go to, you may learn all or just some of the dances to start. Certain instructors prefer to focus on only one or two dances at a time. Find one that works for you.

International Style Standard Dances are: Waltz; Tango; Viennese Waltz; Foxtrot; and Quickstep. International Style
Latin Dances are: Cha Cha; Samba; Rumba; Paso Doble; and Jive.

American Style Smooth Dances are: Waltz; Tango; Foxtrot;
and Viennese Waltz. American Style Rhythm Dances are:
Cha Cha; Rumba; East Coast Swing; Bolero; and Mambo.

Like WWD said, it's a blast! I've taught social ballroom before and it's not expensive. However, studios can be quite pricey. Also check out you local ballroom dance societies and community leagues.

If you want to see any of the dances, try this link:

I hope this helps!

You are blessed to have a boyfriend who wants to dance!!! An ballroom dancing is fun and great exercise. I'll give you a brief overview of Ballroom dancing. Ballroom dancing covers from Tango to Swing, from Foxtrot to Waltz. You have two parts to ballroom dancing rhythm and smooth. The Rhythm dances are the Latin dances like salsa, mambo, rumba, cha cha and others you will learn. The Smooth dances are the waltz and foxtrot but you have national and international styles of these dances. You will have fun learning, doing and practicing all of these dances, that is a promise.
As for shoes, right now I would wear comfortable leather sole flats until you decide that this is the sport for you. It is a sport, with great benefits on all levels. Then, purchase a practice shoe for dancing that is comfortable, durable and functional for all dances in ballroom from a local retailer. Most ballroom dancers will tell you were to get shoes, locally and on line, if you decide that you like this sport.
